    1. Diet Soda

    If you just look at the ads and tv commercials, you'd think that diet soda alone can increase your strength and give you a perfect body for your run on the beach.

    It has zero calories! How can it not be good for you?!

    It's the perfect answer for those that want their soda and drink it, too!

    Simple logic tells you that something with no calories and no sugar will help you lose weight and bring your blood sugar under control.

    It makes so much sense.

    The problem is, we are not given the whole truth about what these drinks do to our bodies and how much they push our metabolism in the wrong direction.

    The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 1 in 5 Americans drink diet soda every day, with most saying they do it to lose weight.

    Fact is, these drinks with unnatural sugar substitutes are doing just the opposite.

    According to a recent study done by the University of Manitoba, the use of non-nutritive artificial sweeteners like those found in diet soda, are "significantly associated" with increased belly fat, increased waist circumference, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.

    Part of the reason for this is the psychological effect of eating more calories because you believe they are being offset by your diet soda.

    The bigger reason may surprise you, though. It all comes down to your taste buds.

    Taste buds have very sensitive microscopic hairs called microvilli. Those tiny hairs send messages to the brain about how something tastes, so you know if it's sweet, sour, bitter, or salty.

    Your mouth has approximately 10,000 taste buds, but did you know that your mouth is not the only place you have them?

    You also have them in your intestines and even in your stomach!

    The taste buds in your mouth distinguish tastes for sensory perception, but the taste buds in your stomach are there to tell your body how to digest the food and what to burn for energy.

    The artificial sweeteners don't taste exactly like sugar in your mouth, but they do a good job of tricking your stomach.

    Not only that, because they are much more concentrated than sugar, they tell your stomach that you've just swallowed something REALLY sweet!

    The effect is the same, and maybe worse, than sugary soda. Your body stores more fat and increases your hunger.

    On top of all that, the University of Boston School of Medicine has found that diet soda may also increase your risk of stroke and dementia!

    2. Low Fat or Skim Milk

    How can skim milk possibly be bad? We've been told for years that we shouldn't be drinking whole fat milk!

    Doesn't whole fat make you...fat?!

    Until recently, that has always been the consensus.

    Like a lot of foods that people are told will help lose weight and control blood sugar, skim milk has shown to be a false hope.

    Popular medicine too often makes recommendations based on one aspect of a food without considering the biological (and psychological) effect of other ingredients found in that same food.

    Add skim milk to that list.

    Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian is a cardiologist, epidemiologist and dean of a major school of nutrition and science. He led a group of scientists in a 15 year study of 3,333 people to see the effect of low fat and whole fat diets, particularly when it comes to dairy.

    What Dr. Mozaffrain and his colleagues found has shaken the medical community and dieticians around the world.

    They found that "people who had higher levels of three different byproducts of full-fat dairy had, on average, a 46% lower risk of getting diabetes during the study period than those with lower levels".

    In other words, if you're drinking skim milk because you think it will help with blood sugar and weight gain, think again.

    The study showed that "there is no prospective human evidence that people who eat low-fat dairy do better than people who eat whole-fat dairy."

    In fact, even with people who still gained weight, whole milk lowered their risk of diabetes and they were generally healthier.

    Some of the results are probably because people who drink skim milk and low-fat dairy will sometimes offset that with eating foods higher in sugar and carbohydrates, just like diet soda.

    It's easy to justify eating bad food, as long as you're also eating food that you think is healthy. The psychology of "diet" foods and the boomerang effect of increasing calories in other areas is well documented.

    Psychology alone can't fully explain the numbers, though.

    High fat dairy may simply provide enough calories that you're not hungry, so you eat less; fat makes you full.

    It may be that it makes the liver and muscle work harder and become more efficient in burning sugar.

    High fat dairy, like cheese, also has microbes that work to improve insulin response.

    Most likely, it's a combination of all of these things.

    A separate study from the American Journal of Nutrition also looked specifically at weight gain and dairy products.

    They found that with the 18, 438 women in their Women's Health Study, those who consumed the most high fat dairy products lowered their risk of being overweight or obese by 8%!

    As crazy as it seems, low fat milk does not help in keeping your fat low or your blood sugar under control.

    3. Fruit and Fruit Juice

    I know, now I've gone too far. Nothing so universally seen as healthy as fruit could possibly be bad for me, right?

    Well, I'm not saying it's bad, necessarily, but let me tell you a story.

    Not long ago I had a young woman, 22 years old, come to me to ask about why she couldn't seem to lose weight. She was quite overweight and pre-diabetic, but still active and should have had a very active metabolism.

    She told me she had been dieting and eating only 1,000 calories a day... and still gaining weight!

    I said, "no way!"

    As always, I told her to write down the food she ate, as well as the time and amount. I had such a hard time believing that she was only consuming 1,000 calories per day.

    She came back a few days later with a list of everything she had eaten and, just like she said, it was about 1,000 calories.

    All of her food was organic and she only ate a few small meals each day.

    The problem was her snacks.

    She ate fruit – watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes – almost exclusively and she had it several times in between meals.

    When I tested her insulin, I almost fell over!

    A normal insulin level is about 5 or 6 and hers was a whopping 65! Higher than I've ever seen it before!

    Her problem was not calories, or even sugar, it was the fact that her body was reacting to the fruit and creating insulin. Lots of insulin!

    On top of that, she was only taking in 1,000 calories so there was nothing to offset the reaction.

    Later, I will explain in detail how insulin really works, but for now just know that insulin blocks fat.

    It tells your body to store fat and burn sugar for energy. This young woman, who already had a predisposition to diabetes, was adding a turbo charge to the process.

    Her idea of healthy was driving her pre-diabetes and causing her to retain and gain fat.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying fruit is altogether bad. Many of the vitamins found in fruits are greatly beneficial.

    The problem is, you can quickly get too much of a good thing.

    If you're going to eat fruit, try to stick to ones that are low on the glycemic index; berries, grapefruit, apples, and pears are good examples.

    Even more dangerous, and less beneficial, is drinking fruit juice.

    Ever wonder why people are told to drink orange juice if they need to raise their blood sugar after getting a hypoglycemic spell?

    Ever wonder why the juice glasses are always so tiny? The amount of juice that is good and healthy is very low, even as compared to whole fruits.

    First of all, most of the nutrients in fruit are in the skin and pulp, so juice rarely has all the benefit. More importantly, the sugar content in juice is higher and more concentrated than in raw fruit and it raises blood sugar much faster.

    In essence, you're taking all of the bad characteristics of fruit and concentrating them in one glass, while discarding much of the good.

    If you need to cut down or limit how much fruit you eat, you probably need to eliminate fruit juice completely.

    Here's what you SHOULD drink:

    Water! Add a lemon wedge if you’d like!

    Hot, warm or cold, it’s the best thing for you. I know you probably already knew this, but most people are under-hydrated and should be drinking at least 100 ounces per day.

    To calculate, take your body weight (in lbs), multiply by 2/3, and THAT’s how much pure water you should drink every day. If you weight 160lbs, you should drink 107 ounces of water per day (9 cups). I recommend you drink 24 ounces right when you wake up in the morning.

    To really put the information you've learned so far into context (and to understand the valuable information coming up), we need to discuss what insulin is and how it works.

    Without getting a grasp on what's actually happening in your body, it's difficult to diagnose problems and to know how and why to fix them.

    Every time you eat, your body produces insulin because you need it to help your body burn energy.

    Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to burn sugar (glucose) as energy. It helps your blood sugar from getting too high or too low.

    When you eat food, nutrients are released into your blood stream and the pancreas sends insulin to help take the sugar and escort it into your cells so they can use it as energy. It is the key to letting the energy your body needs into your cells.

    In healthy people, when the sugar runs out, your body still needs energy, so it switches to burning fat.

    If your body has trouble with this process, that means trouble for everything within your body, from energy production, to mental ability, to overall health.

    Diabetes is your body's inability to produce or properly use insulin and the two types of diabetes are essentially each side of that coin.

    Before I describe the differences, let me give you a few statistics that might come as a shock.

    In the US today, there are at least 84 million people who are diabetic or pre-diabetic (meaning they are at severe risk for developing the disease).

    That's one out of every three people.

    By 2025, it is predicted that this may grow to as much as 50%!

    According to the 2017 National Diabetes Statistics Report, it is the 7th leading cause of death, as well as a major cause of kidney disease, amputations, and blindness.

    The estimated annual cost of diabetes in America is $245 billion.

    Keep these numbers in mind while going through the rest of the information.

    Now, let's compare the two types of diabetes.

    Type 1 is often called Juvenile Diabetes because it usually occurs in kids and it makes up only about 5% to 10% of cases. The symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment are generally close together and the treatment is pretty standard.

    This type of diabetes is caused by an inability of the pancreas to produce insulin, so the answer is to simply introduce insulin into the blood stream, normally by way of injection (although, there have been successful pancreas transplants, too!).

    Blood sugar needs to be constantly monitored so that the proper amount and timing of insulin is used when needed.

    Type 2 diabetes is the opposite. It's not a problem of not making enough insulin, it's an issue of too much.

    Sugar produces insulin, and when too much sugar hits the bloodstream, the pancreas tries to compensate by continuing to produce more and more insulin. The insulin does a good job of transporting the glucose into the cells, but eventually the cells get full and the excess pours over and back into the blood stream, which can cause all kinds of problems. 90 to 95% of all cases of diabetes are type 2.

    Imagine a pitcher full of water, with the water representing glucose. Type 1 diabetes is like trying to pour the water into a glass (your cells) with a lid on it. There's no way for the water to get in and, as the water cascades over the sides, the glass stays dry inside. Only insulin can take the lid off.

    With Type 2 diabetes, your body has insulin to take the lid off, but there is more than enough glucose available and the insulin keeps the lid off while the water fills the glass to overflowing.

    The glucose also runs over and back into the bloodstream, just like with type 1, but for the opposite reason. Eventually the cells become resistant to the insulin, the lid gets harder and harder to pry off and your body gets less able to process the sugar.

    The answer for most people with type 2 diabetes is generally drugs to treat the symptoms and then insulin when the drugs don't work to address the real problem.
